Day 125

"The burden of the word of the LORD"

Text: Zechariah 12:1

DIFFERENT ELEMENTS IN PROPHETIC BOOKS

Some parts of the prophetic books are easier to understand than others. There are different elements to take note of:

1. Historical references

These are easier to comprehend.

2. Prophecies about the future of Israel

This is a little bit more complicated.

3. Prophecies concerning the Messiah

Even more complicated. No single prophetic book offers a full picture of His life and ministry.

ANOTHER COMPLEX WORD GIVEN

Zechariah was given another complex prophecy. This text requires great care in reading and interpretation.

“The burden of the word of the LORD against Israel.
Thus says the LORD, who stretches out the heavens,
lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him:”
Zechariah 12:1

1. “The burden of the word of the LORD against Israel”

a) The word “burden” was used earlier (Zechariah 9:1).
b) This was essentially a message from the LORD.
c) It was a heavy and hard message against Israel.
d) This verse is to be read and understood in the context of Zechariah 11.
e) If Israel had bad and wicked shepherds:
i) Then this message would affect the leaders.
ii) The nation would also be adversely affected.

2. A formal description of God who gave this word

a) He is described as The Creator of heaven and earth.
b) He is further described as the One who formed the spirit of man (Gen. 1:26-27).
