Day 11

"My lord, what are these?"

Text: Zechariah 1:9

SEEKING TO UNDERSTAND

Zechariah saw this vision but he could not understand its meaning. Wisely and humbly, he sought instruction and guidance.

“Then I said, ‘My lord, what are these?’
So the angel who talked with me said to me,
‘I will show you what they are.'”
Zechariah 1:9

1. “Then I said”

a) This was Zechariah’s response to what he saw in the vision given to him.
b) He sought to articulate what he felt and thought.

2. “My lord, what are these?”

a) “My lord”
i) This is a term of respect given to one who deserves the regard.
ii) This is not a reference to God Himself.
b) What this address reflects:
i) Humility
ii) Proper regard
c) “What are these?”
i) Zechariah saw many things (horsemen, horses, the hollow).
ii) He did not assume understanding.
iii) He raised a question with a genuine desire to learn.

3. “So the angel who talked with me said to me, ‘I will show you what they are.'”

a) God had sent a teaching angel.
b) Zechariah recognized his superior standing and thus addressed him as “lord”.
c) The teaching angel responded graciously. He would “show” Zechariah.
