"Let our people also learn to maintain good works..."

Text: Titus 3:14

MAINTAINING GOOD WORKS

The pastoral epistle to Titus concluded on a strong note of advice to Titus to encourage true-hearted believers to maintain good works.

“And let our people also learn to maintain good works,
to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us
in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.”
Titus 3:14-15

1. “And let our people also learn to maintain good works”

a) “Our people”
i) Immediate reference would be the church in Crete (Titus 1:5).
ii) A larger reference would be to the churches Paul had founded.
iii) Titus would have some means of contact with “their people”.
b) “Also learn to maintain good works”
i) Doing good works is a spiritual virtue that needs to be learned.
ii) Maintaining good works is a further discipline that needs to be cultivated.

2. Two special reasons highlighted:-

a) “To meet urgent needs”
i) The specific reference was “missionary work”.
ii) Zenas and Apollos were serving the Lord.
iii) There were always urgent needs to be met.
b) “Not be unfruitful”
i) To be fruitful should always be on the mind of faithful believers.
ii) To do nothing would truly be unfruitful.
iii) To be able to meet urgent needs would reflect fruitfulness.

3. A final word of greeting

a) Those who were with Paul (other team members) were sending their greetings to Titus.
b) Paul asked Titus to send their greetings to those who loved them in the faith.
c) He was all too aware of the fact that not all loved them.
d) The ubiquitous wish of the “grace of God” was Paul’s affectionate parting word to Titus.
