"Through Jesus Christ our Saviour..."

Text: Titus 3:6

DIFFERENT ROLES APPRECIATED

The apostle Paul carefully noted the different roles played by all Three Persons in the Triune Godhead. This is a truly deep understanding of how wondrously complex and profound our salvation is.

“Whom He poured out on us abundantly through
Jesus Christ our Saviour.”
Titus 3:6

1. “He”

a) This is a reference to God the Father.
b) The context would substantiate this conclusion.

2. “He poured out”

a) The outpouring is a reference to the giving of the Holy Spirit.
b) He is poured out like life-giving water.

3. “On us abundantly”

a) Believers are the recipients.
b) The word “abundantly” can be translated as “richly”.

4. “Through Jesus Christ”

a) There is clear reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The specific reference to Him may have been done for a number of reasons:-
i) To withstand any attempt to undermine the doctrine of salvation.
ii) To reinforce the role that the Lord Jesus played in gaining salvation for mankind.
iii) To highlight the fact that Jesus was indeed the Christ (“the anointed one”).

5. “Our Saviour”

a) God the Father was called “Saviour” (Titus 1:3; 3:4).
b) The Lord Jesus Christ was also accorded this same title in this text.
c) This seems to be a deliberate attempt by the apostle Paul to establish the following truths:-
i) God and the Lord Jesus Christ were equal to each other.
ii) Both may indeed be called “Saviour”.
iii) This was written to refute the false teachers who would accept that God may be called “Saviour” but not Jesus (and vice versa).
iv) This was written out of a personal appreciation of the Lord Jesus as Saviour.

This wonderful Saviour had appeared to Paul and had gloriously saved him (Acts 9).
