"The older men..."

Text: Titus 2:2

MINISTRY TO OLDER MEN

It is hard to speak well for the Lord. It is even more challenging when the speaker is a younger man attempting to minister to older men. Nevertheless this must be done.

“That the older men be sober, reverent,
temperate, sound in faith, in love, in patience.”
Titus 2:2

1. Ministry to “older men”

a) The specific reference is indeed to older men.
b) It is a great challenge to master this ministry for a younger man.

2. General goals to be borne in mind

a) Instruction is needed.
b) Inspiration is also needed.
c) Time must be given too.
d) Care and concern must be shown.
e) Pastoral ministry to older men must be given due consideration.

3. Specific things:-

a) Sober
To be self-controlled and not given to indulgences.
b) Reverent
Living in a dignified way is in mind here.
c) Temperate
Showing good sense.

4. Very specific focus

The following aspects were written with definite articles attached to each noun. Paul was making very specific reference here.

a) Sound in (the) faith.
This is a reference to objective faith as taught in the Scriptures. This is not a general reference to the personal faith a person may have.
b) In (the) love
This is a reference to the love taught by the Lord Jesus. It is a special fruit of the Holy Spirit. The individual must be encouraged to cultivate this love (Greek- “agape”).
c) In (the) patience
i) It is a reference to perseverance.
ii) True faith and love will endure in perseverance.
