"In hope of eternal life..."

Text: Titus 1:2

THE DOCTRINE OF ETERNAL LIFE

This was at the heart of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. This theme was preached again and again by the Lord Jesus Himself and by His apostles. This emphasis was captured by all the gospel writers. Paul articulated this same belief in his ministry of preaching the Gospel.

“In hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie,
promised before time began.”
Titus 1:2

1. “In hope of eternal life”

a) The focus of the Gospel is “life”.
b) Several features may be noted:-
i) It has to do with life in general.
ii) The Lord Jesus described it as “an abundant life”.
iii) There is also an eternal aspect of that life.
iv) It is a life that will stretch to all eternity.

2. What may we understand by the word “hope”?

a) This word does not mean uncertainty.
b) It expresses the following:-
i) Anticipation of eternal life.
ii) Naturally the eternal (time) aspect cannot be realised fully in this earthly life.
c) It is best understood in relationship to “faith”.
d) Hope and faith are intertwined.

3. “Which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began”

a) The hope we have stems from the Lord God Himself.
b) The Person of God
i) He cannot lie.
ii) This is part and parcel of the nature of the Being of God.
iii) He has given a promise of eternal life even before time began.
iv) He will keep His word of promise of eternal life.

A CERTAIN HOPE

The hope of eternal life through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is truly uplifting! It can dispel the fear of death. It liberates the believer to live with the greatest sense of joy and confidence in the Lord and His word.
