"To make His power known..."

Text: Romans 9:22

THE HIGHER PURPOSE OF GOD

There is great purpose in all that God does! Paul appeals to all to consider a vital truth- that God has His own high purpose in doing things!

“What if God, wanting to show His wrath
and to make His power known, endured
with much longsuffering, the vessels of wrath
prepared for destruction, and that He might make known
the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He
had prepared beforehand for glory,
even us whom He called, not of the Jews only,
but also of the Gentiles?”
Romans 9:22-24

1. The higher purpose of God

a) To show His wrath
b) To make His power known

2. God is not a whimsical Deity

a) He has “endured with much longsuffering” the sins of man.
b) This is one aspect of God that is not as well appreciated.

3. Two vessels compared/contrasted

a) Vessels of wrath

These will have His wrath poured out on them. (God’s wrath has already been
discussed at length in Romans 1-3)!

b) Vessels of mercy

These will receive the Lord’s blessings. However, these blessings are appreciated as stemming from God’s mercy and grace!

4. God’s will further elucidated

a) The riches of God’s glory will be displayed ultimately.
b) God’s grace and mercy are given to all He called.
c) Both Jews and Gentiles are called to receive His blessings- but His calling is only by virtue of His own sovereign will.
