"Buried with Him through baptism into death..."

Text: Romans 6:4

THE LIFE OF CHRIST

The life of Christ is most glorious to study! All genuine believers are challenged to follow Him, walking in His footsteps (Cf.1 Peter 2:21). Every effort made, every endeavour undertaken pleases God and results in blessing in life. To follow Christ as fully as possible is the highest ideal for every genuine believer.

IDENTIFICATION WITH CHRIST

Paul introduces a concept that is even more staggering! He speaks of the believer’s identification with Christ.

“Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was raised from the dead by
the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk
in newness of life.”
Romans 6:4

Paul highlighted our identification with Christ in the following areas:-

1. Christ’s death

All believers are identified with Christ in His death.

a) Christ died to sin.
b) Every believer has died to sin too.

2. Christ’s burial

All believers are identified with Christ in His burial.

a) Baptism is employed as a picture of our identification with Christ.
b) What is the significance of Christ’s burial?
i) Death exercises its sting.
ii) Death seeks to exert its reign of power.
iii) Burial is just the prelude to something far greater.

3. Christ’s resurrection from the dead

a) He rose from the dead as a Victor over sin and Satan.
b) The genuine believer is also identified with Christ in His resurrection; he does not lie buried! He is risen with Christ!
