Day 43

"Your circumcision has become uncircumcision."

Text: Romans 2:25

MORE THAN JUST RITES

What was the Abrahamic Covenant? Could it be reduced to the mere rite of circumcision? Paul argues otherwise.

“For circumcision is indeed profitable if you keep the law;
but if you are a breaker of the law, your circumcision
has become uncircumcision.”
Romans 2:25

1. How would circumcision be “profitable?

The observation of the rite of circumcision is an expression of the following:-

a) It is an act of obedience to God.
b) It is an acceptance of the Abrahamic Covenant.
c) It is an appreciation of the Abrahamic Covenant.
d) Obedience to the Lord’s commandments always results in blessings.

2. In tandem with the keeping of the law

There were some who thought that the mere rite of circumcision was sufficient to bring about God’s blessings. They were wrong!

a) The concept of “in tandem” (positive)
i) It means keeping the rite of circumcision.
ii) It must also mean the keeping of the law.
b) The concept of “in tandem” (negative)
i) The breaking of the law.
ii) Disobedience to the law negates circumcision!

A CLOSER LOOK AT THE CONTEXT OF THE GIVING OF THE COVENANT

A careful study of Genesis 17 would confirm that Paul was right in his understanding. God said these words to Abraham as He gave him the sign of the covenant.

“The LORD appeared to Abram and said to him,
‘I am Almighty God: walk before Me and be blameless.”
Genesis 17:1

To walk before the Lord blameless is to keep His laws!
