Romans
"And the God of peace will crush Satan..."
Text: Romans 16:20
ENGAGED IN SPIRITUAL BATTLE
Paul’s word of advice concerning spiritual warfare must be taken seriously (Cf. Ephesians 6). His words of admonition came from years of engagement in spiritual warfare with false teachers!
1. Putting on the whole spiritual armour God has provided (Cf. Ephesians 6:10-18).
2. Power (strength) from the Lord must be carefully sought:-
a) Through knowledge of the Lord’s word.
b) Through the exercise of faith.
c) Through prayer.
CONFIDENCE IN ULTIMATE VICTORY
This is something that must be a powerfully believed in! This was a confidence that Paul himself felt.
“And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.”
Romans 16:20
1. Invoking the name of “The God of Peace”
a) Paul’s focus on God was formidable.
b) He sought to urge the Roman brethren to focus on “The God of Peace”.
2. Will crush Satan under your feet shortly
a) There is a veiled reference to the serpent being crushed by the Lord (Cf. Genesis 3:15).
b) Satan was obviously at work against the Church in Rome.
c) Paul believed that Satan’s efforts would fail.
d) God Himself would crush (defeat) Satan at the feet of the Roman brethren.
3. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
Paul also relied heavily on both the availability and abundance of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ! His cry “Amen” displayed his absolute confidence in the crushing of Satan’s attempts to hurt the Church in Rome!
