"Strive together with me in prayers to God for me."

Text: Romans 15:30

ASKING FOR PRAYER SUPPORT

Paul’s humble request for prayer support is deeply touching. We often associate the need for prayer support with those who are weak. How may we understand Paul’s request for support in prayer?

“Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ,
and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together
with me in prayers to God for me.”
Romans 15:30

1. Now I beg you, brethren,

a) The word “beg” is simply the word “beseech” (Cf. Romans 12:1).
b) This word is used to express deep humility.

2. Through the Lord Jesus Christ

a) There is an invocation of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) This is to add to the idea of “beseeching”.
c) Thus we have both a humble and strong request from Paul.

3. Through the love of the Spirit

a) The name of the Holy Spirit is also invoked.
b) The Spirit of God is associated with “love”
i) Love as a fruit of the Spirit.
ii) Love for the apostle Paul.
iii) Love for the work that Paul was engaged in deeply.

4. Strive together with me in prayers to God for me

a) “Striving” suggests a significant amount of energy and effort.
b) Paul pleaded for intercessory prayer support for his life and ministry.
c) Praying was obviously something that Paul did not take for granted at all! His idea of prayer is most challenging.
