"Do not destroy the work of God..."

Text: Romans 14:20

THE DANGER OF CALLOUSNESS

Much time was devoted to resolving the issue of “eating and drinking”. Paul had made it very clear that the bottom line was “personal choice”. However, a word of caution still needed to be uttered.

“Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food.”
Romans 14:20a

1. The works of God

Many are the works of God! We may broadly divide them into two categories for discussion purposes:-

a) That which man cannot destroy
i) Things which are of an eternal nature.
ii) Things which are of a universal nature.

These things cannot be destroyed for God has established them.

b) That which may end up destroying
i) The new faith of a believer.
ii) The new life of a believer.

2. Destruction of God’s work

a) Callousness can hurt new believers badly.
b) Great damage can unwittingly be done to believers.
c) Finally, destruction may take place.

A SERIOUS WORD OF WARNING

This was a very serious word of warning Paul gave out! Would anyone hazard the possible destruction of God’s work in the life of a believer… for the sake of food?

a) The proposition is absurd!
b) Nevertheless this word of warning had to be sounded out… to those who are callous!

The work of God must be regarded as most sacred. In destroying God’s work we will bring harm to ourselves.
