"Do not let your good be spoken as evil..."

Text: Romans 14:16

THE GOOD AND THE BAD DISTINGUISHED

Good and Bad must always be clearly distinguished! It is inevitable that there would be lists of Good and Bad things. It is important to distinguish between good and bad (Cf. Romans 12).

IT IS GOOD TO HAVE A STRONG MIND AND FAITH

It is certainly advantageous to have a strong mind and faith! Two advantages may be highlighted:-

1. A strong faith that enables us to eat freely all things (Romans 14:2)

2. A strong faith that enables us to esteem all days alike (Romans 14:5)

IT IS POSSIBLE TO STUMBLE A WEAKER BELIEVER

Paul urged all strong believers to exercise the utmost regard for those who are weaker. Those who are weaker could end up misinterpreting the actions of the stronger ones.

“Therefore do not let your good
be spoken of as evil.”
Romans 14:16

1. Interpretation of things

a) Interpreting an action is not as simple as it may appear.
b) A good thing may be interpreted as something bad.

2. Therefore do not let your good…

a) A strong but insensitively applied faith may be wrongly understood.
b) If that which is good is misunderstood there will be sad repercussions.

3. Spoken of as evil

How is this possible? Let us ponder the following thoughts:-

a) One may be misunderstood as being arrogant.
b) One may be misunderstood as rejecting the Laws of God.
c) One may be misunderstood as a stumbling block.
d) One may even be misunderstood as a bad believer.
