"Whose end is destruction..."

Text: Philippians 3:19

THE FINAL OUTCOME

Paul had to warn the Philippians in no uncertain terms about the outcome of these false brethren. With grave solemnity he wrote these chilling words of warning.

“Whose end is destruction, whose god is their belly,
And whose glory is in their shame-
Who set their mind on earthly things.”

Philippians 3:19

1. “Whose end is destruction”

a) What is at the end of the line for these false teachers?
b) Paul spoke of their “destruction”.
i) The Lord Himself will bring about their destruction.
ii) Paul is not judging them.
iii) The judgment is ultimately the Lord’s but the Divine conclusion was not difficult to predict.

2. “Whose god is their belly”

a) Who was “the god” they worshipped?
b) It certainly was not the Lord Jesus Christ.
c) Paul minced no words when he said that the god of these false teachers was “their belly”.
i) They were making use of religion to make money.
ii) The gospel was no more than just merchandise.
iii) The people who believed in them were no more than “customers”.

3. “Whose glory is in their shame”

a) There is really no glory in what they taught and did.
b) Whatever they claimed as “glory” was shameful.

4. “Who set their mind on earthly things”

a) They did not have the mind of Christ.
b) They were not thinking as Christ did (Philippians 2:5).
c) Their main concern was for “earthly things”.
i) They drew disciples from people whose hearts were more concerned about earthly things.
ii) Their mind was not on things eternal and heavenly.
iii) Their focus was antithetical to all that the apostle stood for.
