"Your prayer and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ."
Text: Philippians 1:19
THE PLACE OF PRAYER
The apostle placed a high value on prayer. This was evidenced in the way he wrote about prayer in Philippians 1. In the first chapter, there were two prayers mentioned.
1. Personal thanksgiving prayer (Philippians 1:3)
2. Intercessory prayer (Philippians 1:9-11)
A THIRD REFERENCE TO PRAYER
A third reference to prayer was made in the following text.
“For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance
through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit
of Jesus Christ.”
Philippians 1:19
1. “For I know”
a) The word used here is in the Perfect Tense (Greek “oida”).
b) This word is often used to describe:-
i) Deep knowledge
ii) Full confidence
2. “This will turn out for my deliverance”
a) The word here is often translated “salvation”.
b) Paul was confident that he would be “delivered” or “saved” from his imprisonment.
3. “Through your prayer”
a) He expressed confidence that the prayer of the Philippians would not be in vain.
b) God would hear and answer their intercessory prayer for him.
c) This confidence Paul exhibits is possible because of his close relationship with God.
d) The Lord probably intimated to him that he would be released from imprisonment.
4. “And the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ”
a) This is a reference to the Holy Spirit.
b) Here He is called “The Spirit of Jesus Christ”.
i) He is called “The Helper”. (Greek “parakletos”) {John 14:16}
ii) He was requested by Jesus from the Father.
iii) He was Paul’s Paraclete (Helper).
iv) He would bring about his deliverance from the prison.
