"You should not have entered the gate of My people"

Text: Obadiah 13

SECOND SERIES OF “YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE”

Obadiah went to declare the second series of “you should not have”.

“You should not have entered the gate of My people
In the day of their calamity.
Indeed, you should not have gazed on their affliction
In the day of their calamity,
Nor laid hands on their substance
In the day of their calamity.”
Obadiah 13

1. “You should not have entered the gate of My people in the day of their calamity”

a) “The day of calamity”

This was also described as:

i) The day of captivity
ii) The day of destruction
iii) The day of distress
b) The various descriptions help us comprehend what Judah experienced:
i) Great sorrow
ii) Great trauma
c) Edom was quite a distance away from Judah geographically.
i) Yet they were there in Jerusalem.
ii) They had taken the trouble to travel some distance to be there.
iii) They had entered Jerusalem but not with an intention of helping the children of Judah.

2. “You should not have gazed on their affliction in the day of their calamity”

a) They had virtually been spectators.
b) They had come to watch the fall of Jerusalem.
c) They had come to gloat over their enemies (the children of Israel).

3. “Nor laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity”

a) The Edomites watched the Babylonians go to war against Judah.
b) They saw many wounded and killed.
c) They saw how the city was ripe for looting.
d) The Edomites may be likened to:
i) Scavengers who swooped in to feast off the remains of the dead.
ii) Hooligan looters who took advantage of a city that had been devastated.
