"Behold, I am against you"

Text: Nahum 2:13

THE LORD AS ASSYRIA’S ADVERSARY

Assyria did not fear any enemy. The Assyrians had defeated every army they met! They felt invincible. But they had not yet met the Lord as their Divine Adversary!

“‘Behold, I am against you,’ says the LORD of hosts,
‘I will burn your chariots in smoke,
and the sword shall devour your young lions;
I will cut off your prey from the earth,
and the voice of your messengers shall be heard no more.'”
Nahum 2:13

1. “The LORD of hosts”

a) This is a special title of the Lord.
b) It is a military title.
c) The equivalent would be “Commander-in-Chief”.
d) The hosts
i) It is a description of the angelic army
ii) The Lord is at the head of the mightiest army ever!

2. The declaration of the Lord

a) He is against the Assyrians.
b) He will battle the Assyrian lions!

3. A description of what God would do

a) The chariots of the Assyrians
They would be burnt up!
b) The young lions of Assyria
They would be devoured (killed) by the sword.
c) The prey of the Assyrians
i) The weaker nations.
ii) They would no longer be prey to the Assyrians.
d) The messengers of the Assyrians
i) These were Assyrian emissaries (ambassadors).
ii) They lorded themselves over weaker nations.
iii) They would taunt and insult the rulers of weaker nations.
iv) But the voice of these arrogant messengers would be heard no more! Assyrian would be destroyed as an empire! The Lord of hosts would see to their demise!
