A True Word Written
Text: John 21: 24- 25
A TRUE WORD WRITTEN
The writer of the Gospel of John humbly declines to use his name. But he does insist that what he has written is absolutely true.
“This is the disciple who testifies of these things, and wrote these things; and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things that Jesus did, which if they were written one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. Amen.”
John 21:24-25
1. The author
a. He identifies himself as “a disciple”.
b. He seeks to write as an eye-witness.
c. He testifies to the truth of what he has written.
d. We know that his testimony is true.
i. This is written from the standpoint of others who would have read his manuscript.
ii. All agreed with John that his gospel was accurately written.
iii. John wrote gladly that there were many who were in total agreement.
2. Many wonderful miracles
a. John was aware that Jesus performed many miracles.
b. He did not include all of them in his gospel.
c. The other gospel accounts recorded many other miracles not found in John’s gospel.
d. John selected miracles and called them “signs”.
e. Their significance was obvious:
i. They identified Jesus as the Son of God.
ii. They pointed to the power that God had given Him.
iii. They verified the truth that Jesus was indeed the Way, the Truth and the Life.
3. Literary approach: The use of “intended exaggeration”
a. John used a literary device called “Intended exaggeration”.
i. “The whole world itself could not contain the books that could be written”.
ii. This is an exaggeration to say that Jesus performed many mighty miracles.
b. This is not a wrong or false statement! It was simply an intended overstatement!
