The Third Time Round

Text: John 21: 17

THE THIRD TIME ROUND

To Peter’s great surprise, Jesus asked him the same question the third time!

“He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’
And he said to Him, ‘Lord, You know all things; You know that I love you.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep.’”

John 20:17

1. “He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me’”

a. Jesus had His reasons why He asked the same question three times in a row.
However, He did not explain why He asked the same question three times over.
b. The question of love for Jesus must be firmly settled!

2. “Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me’”

a. The old character of Peter began to surface when he heard the same question the third time.
b. Peter was “grieved”:
i. This word speaks of the sorrow that Peter felt.
ii. He could not understand why Jesus had to ask the same question three times over.
iii. Did Jesus not believe him?

3. “And he said to him, ‘Lord, you know all things; You know that I love you’”

a. Once again, Peter appealed to Jesus’ complete ability to discern all things.
Jesus must know that Peter did love Him.
b. He must also know that he would not dare to say too much or speak too proudly of his love and loyalty he knew he had in his heart.

4. “Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’”

a. Jesus, of course, knew the heart of Peter.
b. Peter had passed the test given.
i. He would not speak over-confidently now.
ii. He would not boast of his commitment to follow Jesus.
iii. He spoke with a humbled and chastened heart of love for Jesus.

5. “Jesus said to him, ‘Feed my sheep’”

Peter was fully restored in his relationship with the Lord. He would be entrusted with the flock of the Lord!

iii.

iii.
