Advice From Jesus
Text: John 21: 6
ADVICE FROM JESUS
Jesus gave a word of advice to His disciples. Would they heed His word?
“And He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.’ So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.”
John 21:6
1. The context understood
a. The disciples did not know that it was Jesus who spoke to them.
b. There was no compelling reason for them to listen to this word of advice at all.
c. The disciples had worked all night and they had caught nothing.
d. They were tired, disappointed and upset that all the work had yielded nothing.
2. “And He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some”
a. This advice did not sound all that wonderful.
b. Why would the right side of the boat be the place to cast their nets?
c. They probably trawled a large area of the Sea of Tiberias.
d. There was nothing to lose if they tried one more time.
3. “So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish”
a. “So they cast”
i. Not with any great expectation.
ii. They certainly did not anticipate a miracle.
b. “The multitude of fish”
i. To the great surprise of the disciples.
ii. They had a huge catch of fish.
iii. Their net was so heavy with fish they could not draw in the net.
ANOTHER MIRACLE
This was not the first miracle involving a great catch of fish.
1. The first miraculous catch of fish was recorded in Luke 5:1-11.
2. Jesus demonstrated His power and Peter and his friends decided that they would follow Jesus as full-time disciples.
3. This was the second miracle involving a great catch of fish!
