An Attempt to Stone Jesus
Text: John 10: 31-32
AN ATTEMPT TO STONE JESUS
As the Jews listened to Jesus speaking of His relationship with His Father, they became incensed.
“Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, ‘Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?’”
John 10:31-32
1. Stoning
a. Stoning was one of the ways in which the death penalty was carried out.
b. This was an old law provision in the days of Moses.
c. This was a penalty that was to be meted against the following crimes or sin, for example:
i. An ox that has gored someone to death (Exodus 21:28).
ii. Anyone involved in occultism (Leviticus 20:27).
iii. Enticing people to worship idols (Deuteronomy 13:1-7).
iv. Cursing God (Leviticus 24:16).
d. Stoning however must be sanctioned by the highest religious court.
e. It cannot be attempted without due trial.
2. “Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him”
a. This was, of course, illegal.
b. This would have been against known practices.
c. The perpetrators could be reported to the Roman authorities.
3. “Jesus answered them”
a. Calmly
b. Without anger and also without fear.
4. “Many good works I have shown you from My Father”
a. Jesus had indeed performed many good works.
b. Once again, He spoke of His works as from His Father.
c. There was always deep affection when He mentioned His Father.
5. “For which of those works do you stone Me?”
a. Jesus asked why they wished to stone Him
b. Which works were so wrong that they could decide that He deserved to be stoned?
