In the Temple

Text: John 9:1-2

IN THE TEMPLE

Many went to the Temple to seek God and to pray. Jesus saw the many people who came and He sought to teach them about God.

However, the religious leaders kept interfering His teaching program. They did this in a number of ways:

1. They wanted to debate Him.

2. They questioned everything He taught.

3. They cast doubts about Jesus.

4. They made wild accusations against Him.

Jesus had no choice but to leave the Temple. Had He not left when He did, the Jews would have thrown stones at Him. God helped Him to escape from the evil plans of the religious leaders.

OUT IN THE STREETS

Ministry for Jesus did not cease when He walked out of the Temple. Ministry may be found anywhere people had needs.

“Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. And His disciples asked him, saying, ‘Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?’”

John 9:1-2

1. “Now as Jesus passed by”

a) This text is best read with John 8:59 in mind.
b) He had passed through the crowds who wanted to kill Him.
c) As He walked past the hostile crowd in the temple, He saw a blind man.

2. Meeting with the blind man

a) This did not happen by chance.
b) All things have been arranged by God.
c) But not all are able to see and understand the works of God.

3. “His disciples asked Him”

a) “Rabbi” simply means “Respected or great Teacher”.
b) This was one of the common ways His disciples and others would sometimes address Him.

4. The question that the disciples raised

a) What caused this blindness?
b) If it was sin, who sinned? His parents or the man himself?

This was an unfortunate and wrong way of understanding the plight of the blind man!
