Unfazed by the Bitter Sarcasm of the Jews
Text: John 8: 23-24
UNFAZED BY THE BITTER SARCASM OF THE JEWS
Jesus knew that the Jews were being very cynical and sarcastic in their response to what He said. Nevertheless, He continued to teach them.
“And He said to them, ‘You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.’”
John 8:23-24
1. “And He said to them”
a. There was no bitterness in the heart of Jesus.
b. There was no bitter response either.
c. He continued to fulfil what His Father had sent Him to do… to be the Light of the world.
2. A careful distinction made
a. The Jews
i. They were from beneath (that is, of the earth).
ii. They were of the world (with all its sinfulness and imperfections).
b. Jesus Himself
i. He was from above. He could not deny who He was no matter if no one believed Him.
ii. He was not of this world… for there was nothing but truth and light in the Being of Jesus.
3. “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins”
a. The sins of the Jews were obvious and grievous.
i. They were unrepentant.
ii. They were wicked and vicious.
iii. They were plotting the death of Jesus (even though they would deny this).
b. “If you do not believe that I am He”
i. If they continued in unbelief.
ii. If they rejected Jesus as their Messiah.
iii. If they rejected His offer of salvation.
c. “You will die in your sins”
This was the inevitable conclusion. The thought of judgment from God and the consequences of sins unforgiven should have caused the Jews to reconsider. But their hearts were too hardened!
