Seeking to Give An Explanation
Text: John 7: 22-24
SEEKING TO GIVE AN EXPLANATION
Jesus felt that He had to explain the Sabbath law to all who came to Him. The misunderstanding of the Sabbath law has caused great hardship and grief to the nation and all who slavishly kept this law!
“Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers),
and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If a man receives circumcision on the Sabbath, so that the law of Moses should not be broken, are you angry with Me because I made a man completely well on the Sabbath? Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.”John 7:22-24
1. Two laws of Moses
a. The law of the Sabbath.
b. The law of circumcision.
c. This was called “the law of Moses” as well.
d. Historically, this law came through Abraham, who lived hundreds of years before Moses (Genesis 17).
2. When does a male child get circumcised?
a. On the eighth day.
b. On this day the baby is also given his name.
c. But what if the 8th day is a Sabbath day?
d. The child is circumcised anyway.
e. This however is seen as an exception to the rule.
f. The Sabbath law is not considered broken when the circumcision takes place on the Sabbath.
3. Anger
a. Why were the Jews angry with Jesus?
b. Circumcision on the Sabbath is a true paradox.
4. An important appeal
a. The Jews should not be making wrong judgments.
b. If they were to judge, then they must “judge with righteous judgments”.
c. The present sense of hostility to Jesus was uncalled for.
The Jews were prejudiced against the Lord Jesus Christ!
