Appearing to Understand
Text: John 6: 34-36
APPEARING TO UNDERSTAND
The multitudes appeared to understand what Jesus said when He talked about “the bread of God”. Thus, they asked Jesus for this bread.
“Then they said to Him, ‘Lord, give us this bread always.’ And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet you do not believe.’”
John 6:34-36
1. A request made
a) “Lord, give us this bread always”
b) At first reading
i) It would appear that this was a sincere and good request.
ii) The people were asking to be given this bread of God.
iii) They were asking that Jesus would always supply them with this bread.
2. A revelation of the true picture
a) Jesus declared that He was the bread of life.
b) Did the people really want to have Jesus in their life?
c) Or did they really want physical bread?
3. “He who comes to Me shall never hunger”
a) If they really wanted Jesus in their life
b) They would never be spiritually hungry.
c) But they were asking Jesus for the “bread of God”.
d) Thus, they were expressing that they were hungry… for the physical bread and not Jesus.
4. “And he who believes in Me shall never thirst”
a) Hunger and thirst go together.
b) The person who comes to Jesus through faith will never hunger or thirst again.
5. “But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe”
a) They had seen Jesus perform a truly wondrous miracle.
b) But they did not believe in Jesus at all and thus they asked for the physical bread always!
