The Issue of Believing

Text: John 5:45-47

THE ISSUE OF BELIEVING

The issue of believing in the Lord Jesus is not a straight-forward problem. Jesus highlighted this.

“Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father;
there is one who accuses you- Moses, in whom you trust.
For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me;
for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his
writings, how will you believe My words?”

John 5:45-47

1. “Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father”

a. Jesus did not come to accuse people.
b. Neither had He come to condemn.
c. He had come to help people.
d. He had come to save people from sin and judgment.

2. “There is one who accuses you- Moses, in whom you trust”

a. The Jews had trusted in the teachings of Moses.
b. But if they had correctly read Moses they would have come to believe in Jesus.

3. “For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me”

a. The Jews may have read the writings of Moses.
b. But that did not mean that they actually believed.
i. They did not really believe in Moses.
ii. Nor had they truly believed in the teachings of Moses.
iii. Nor had they truly believed in the God of Moses.
iv. They certainly had not come to believe in Jesus!
c. What Moses wrote about Jesus:
i. That He would be the special Prophet whom God would send.
ii. He would be like Moses… but much greater (Deuteronomy 18:15-19).

4. “But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

a. The problem is “unbelief”.
b. This was the unresolved basic problem. The Jews did not believe in Moses. They would not be able to believe in the words of Jesus!

iii.
