The Witness of God the Father
Text: John 5:32, 37
THE WITNESS OF GOD THE FATHER
Once again, Jesus brought up the witness of God the Father. These two verses are best read together.
“There is another who bears witness of Me, And I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true.” “And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form.”
John 5:32, 37
1. “There is another who bears witness of Me”
a. This is a reference to the Lord God.
b. Jesus declares that God’s witness is absolutely true.
2. “The Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me”
a. Jesus addresses the Lord God as “The Father”.
i. There is such deep affection between Father and Son expressed here.
ii. The bond between Father and Son is unfathomably deep and strong.
b. The Father’s role
i. He had sent Jesus as the Messiah, the Anointed One.
ii. He had testified, that is, borne witness, that He is indeed the promised Anointed One!
3. The problem at hand
a. Jesus stated the problem forthrightly.
b. The opposing had never heard the voice of the Father at any time.
c. They had never seen the form of God at any time also!
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS STATEMENT
Jesus was making an important and sharp distinction between Himself and His opponents.
1. Jesus
a. He was the Son of God.
b. This was proven by the way God bore witness of Him in many ways.
c. Jesus was the One who was approved of God.
2. The unbelieving Jews
a. They did not really know God.
b. They did not have real faith in Him.
Thus, they could not understand or appreciate the teachings and the works of the Lord Jesus Christ!
