Correction of Wrong Beliefs
Text: John 4:24-26
CORRECTION OF WRONG BELIEFS
The Samaritan woman must have been stunned by what Jesus had said about true worship. This was so new but most refreshing!
1. On the negative side
a. The Samaritans were wrong in their understanding of where God was to be worshipped.
b. The Jews were also incorrect in their insistence that God must be worshipped only in Jerusalem.
2. On the positive side
a. God may be worshipped by all true worshippers alike.
i. Samaritans
ii. Jews
b. But He must be worshipped in spirit and in truth.
i. The spirit is what God is looking at and not the form of worship.
ii. Truth is what God desires and not just religious traditions.
BELIEF IN THE MESSIAH
The Samaritan woman wistfully spoke about her hope of “The Messiah” whom God would send one day. She said, “I know that Messiah is coming (who is called Christ). When He comes, He will tell us all things.” John 4:25
1. The word “Messiah” is Jewish and it means “The Anointed One of God”. He was also called “The Christ” (Greek).
a. This was a hope that both Jews and Samaritans possessed.
b. She clung to this hope.
c. The Messiah will come one day and He will teach them all things about God.
d. This was a word of faith that the Samaritan woman disclosed.
2. A special revelation given to the Samaritan woman.
Jesus said simply to the Samaritan woman, “I who speak to you am He.” John 4:26
