Text: John 20: 21
SENT BY THE RISEN LORD
There was a glad reunion between the Lord Jesus and His disciples. The visit came to an end. Before departing, Jesus spoke to them about being sent to do the Lord’s work.
“So Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.’”
John 20:21
1. “So Jesus said to them, ‘Peace to you!’”
a. The phrase, “Peace to you”.
b. This can be used in two standard ways:
i. At the beginning of a visit (Greeting).
ii. At the end of the visit (Farewell).
c. Peace was to be appreciated:
i. It was more than just a polite word of greeting.
ii. It represented God’s presence.
iii. It was a blessing from God.
iv. His Word has the power to keep the heart from feeling fearful.
2. “As the Father has sent Me”
a. Jesus had been most conscious of being sent by His Father.
i. “He whom God has sent speaks the words of God…” (John 3:34).
ii. “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me…” (John 5:24).
iii. “The Father who sent Me.” (John 5:30).
iv. “The very works that I do – bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me
(John 5:36).”
b. Jesus sought to fulfil the Mission that God had sent Him to accomplish:
i. To teach and preach
ii. To heal
iii. To become the Saviour
iv. To suffer for the sins of mankind
3. “I also send you”
a. With full authority as the Son of God.
b. With full power evidenced in His resurrection from the dead.
