Knowledge Of Moses
Text: John 3:14-15
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
John 3:14-15
KNOWLEDGE OF MOSES
Nicodemus would, of course, be familiar with the life and teachings of Moses. All teachers of Israel would have had a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures Moses wrote.
1. The Pentateuch
a. These were the five books Moses wrote.
b. They are the first five books in the Old Testament.
2. The Wilderness
a. The children of Israel spent forty years in “the wilderness”.
b. God had originally planned to lead them into Canaan, the Promised Land.
c. But because of blatant disobedience they had to wander in the wilderness for forty years.
3. The children of Israel as described (Exodus- Deuteronomy)
a. Rebellious
b. Stubborn
c. Complaining
4. A painful incident
a. The children of Israel had complained once too often.
b. God sent fiery snakes among the children of Israel.
c. A bronze serpent was made and the people learned vital lessons:
i. There must be confession of sin.
“We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD…” Numbers 21:7
ii. Hope for the children of Israel
“Everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” Numbers 21:8
5. “Even so mus the Son of Man be lifted up”
a. One day Jesus would be crucified on a Cross.
b. Those who look on Him with faith, confessing their sins, would be saved.
6. “Whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life”
This was a great and divine truth Jesus sought to share with Nicodemus. He must look up to the Lord Jesus Christ and recognise Him for who He was. The promise of eternal life would be realised through faith in Him. Could Nicodemus come to faith in Jesus? The decision to believe in Jesus is ours to make.
