Further Query of the Jews
Text: John 2:20-25
FURTHER QUERY OF THE JEWS
The Jews demanded a clearer explanation of what Jesus said.
1. The physical Temple
a. The Temple was built by King Herod.
b. It had taken forty-six years to build the temple (John 2:20).
c. The Temple was a magnificent building.
2. Raising the Temple in three days
a. How could Jesus raise the Temple in three days?
b. This answer of Jesus was dismissed!
THE SPIRITUAL TEMPLE
Jesus was not referring to the physical temple at all. He was referring to Himself (John 2:21).
1. The body is also called “the temple of God” (1 Corinthians 3:16).
2. Jesus was giving the sign that the Jews had demanded.
a. He was foretelling His death and resurrection.
b. One day He would be killed.
c. But He would be raised on the third day!
3. The Disciples of Jesus
a. They remembered what the Lord Jesus had said to them years later.
b. This knowledge added to the faith of the Disciples (John 2:22).
OTHER SIGNS
Did Jesus show the Jews the sign that they demanded? He did!
1. At the Temple
a. In front of many witnesses
b. Jesus performed many signs.
2. What were these signs?
a. These were miracles.
b. Miracles would take the power of God to perform them.
These would be clear signs that Jesus had the authority to cleanse the temple.
