Cruel And Unnecessary
Text: John 19: 1 - 2
CRUEL AND UNNECESSARY
What Pilate did next was cruel and unnecessary. He applied Roman law inappropriately.
“So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.”
John 19:1-2
1. “So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him”
a. To scourge
i. This act refers to whipping.
ii. It was meant to be a form of torture.
iii. It was meant to force a confession from the prisoner.
b. The whips used
i. Some whips were ordinary, made up of leather.
ii. Some other whips contained hooks that were meant to take off flesh.
iii. People who were not strong physically sometimes die from scourging.
2. “And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head”
a. This was uncalled for.
b. This was done to mock Jesus.
c. A king wears a crown; the crown of Jesus was made of thorns.
d. That would hurt when it is platted on the head.
3. “And they put on Him a purple robe”
a. Purple was worn by the nobility of Rome.
b. Purple robes were worn by kings.
c. This was another form of mockery.
i. It was most likely a faded robe.
ii. It was put on Jesus to mock Him for saying that He was a king.
THE TEACHING OF JESUS ON SUFFERING
Jesus had taught His disciples that they must not be afraid of suffering. Now, he was exemplifying what He had taught!
1. This suffering was prophesied (Isaiah 53).
2. He had to bear our sins through suffering. Our salvation came at a very high price!

残酷且不必要
彼拉多之后所做的十分残酷,也不必要。他胡乱实行罗马律法。
“当下彼拉多将耶稣鞭打了。兵丁用荆棘编做冠冕,戴在他头上,给他穿上紫袍”
