Examining Jesus More Thoroughly
Text: John 18: 33
EXAMINING JESUS MORE THOROUGHLY
Pilate was a Roman governor. He had to act according to official guidelines given to all magistrates.
“Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, ‘Are You the King of the Jews?’”
John 18:33
1. The charge against Jesus before Pilate
a. The charge had obviously changed.
b. The Jews knew that they could not get the Roman governor to try Jesus on religious issues.
c. They must have informed Pilate that Jesus made Himself a king.
2. Roman Law
a. It could be very harsh.
b. It could also be brutal in its execution.
c. A valid charge
i. The Jews obviously knew the Roman Law.
ii. They knew how they would treat those who sought to establish a rival kingdom.
iii. This would mean “rebellion”.
iv. This would mean “insurrection”.
v. This would mean “war”.
3. “Are You the King of the Jews”
a. Pilate had to follow this line of argument.
b. If Jesus proclaimed Himself king then this would be a valid criminal case.
c. Forthright questioning:
i. This was adopted.
ii. This was a very direct and blunt line of reasoning.
d. Jesus would have to give Pilate an answer.
i. He could not deny that He would be the Messiah King.
ii. The prophetic Scriptures had declared that God would make Him a King
(Psalm 2:6; Isaiah 9:6-7).
iii. But if He were to speak of His kingship, He would incriminate Himself as a possible rebel against Roman law.
iv. Jesus would have to speak the truth and yet not incriminate Himself politically and judicially.

更详细地审问耶稣
彼拉多是个罗马巡抚。他需要按照提供给所有官长的官方准则来办事。
“彼拉多又进了衙门,叫耶稣来,对他说:‘你是犹太人的王吗?’”
