Two Sets Of Laws
Text: John 18: 31a
TWO SETS OF LAWS
Pilate had been a governor of Judea for a number of years. He knew the people he ruled quite well. He knew that the Council Members were trying to make use of him to rule in their favour.
“Then Pilate said to them, ‘You take Him and judge Him according to your law.’”
John 18:31a
1. There were two sets of laws existing in Judea
a. Roman Law
b. Jewish Law
2. Roman Law could be appealed to:
a. If a serious crime had been committed.
b. These crimes would include the following:
i. Rebellion against Roman rule
ii. Insurrection
iii. Murder
3. Jewish Law
a. Violation of religious laws.
b. These carried penalties.
c. Jewish Law was allowed by Rome.
d. Rome did not want to handle religious infringements.
e. The governors would not be able to comprehend the intricacies of Jewish religious laws.
f. The Jewish laws may be found in the following Books of the Bible:
i. Leviticus
ii. Deuteronomy
g. The laws also included:
i. The teachings of famous Rabbis.
ii. The judgments passed by the Sanhedrin Council.
h. The legal system of the Jews:
i. The highest Court was the Sanhedrin Council.
ii. If they had passed judgment there was no recourse.
iii. Jesus had already been condemned by the Council without a proper trial being conducted.
