The Candid Reply Of Jesus
Text: John 18: 20 -21
THE CANDID REPLY OF JESUS
Jesus replied candidly. He knew how wily the high priest was. He was not falling into this trap.
“Jesus answered him, ‘I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing. Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed, they know what I said.’”
John 18:20-21
1. “Jesus answered him, ‘I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing’”
a. Everything that Jesus said was true.
b. His teachings were done:
i. In public (“openly to the world”); in the open fields, in public places
ii. In synagogues
iii. In the temple
c. Nothing was done in secret.
i. There was no hidden agenda.
ii. There were no secret plots.
iii. He had never done anything that was wrong or evil.
2. “Why do you ask Me?”
a. Jesus questioned Annas’ approach.
b. It would be futile and fruitless.
c. Did Annas not know what Jesus had said?
i. Surely, he must have known!
ii. Why then would he have approved of the arrest of Jesus?
iii. Why was Jesus brought to him first?
3. “Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed, they know what I said”
a. Annas must have been informed about all that Jesus had said and done.
b. What Jesus had taught was public knowledge. His fame had spread all over the country.
