Oneness
Text: John 17: 22 - 23
ONENESS
Jesus’ concern for “oneness” showed in His prayer. He was so deeply concerned that He brought this matter up five times (John 17:21-23).
“And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one. I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.”
John 17:22-23
1. “And the glory which You gave Me I have given them”
a. The glory God gave Jesus was given to the Disciples.
b. Some features:
i. Authority in ministry
ii. Power in ministry
iii. Strength in ministry
iv. Success in ministry
2. “That they may be one just as We are one”
a. Glory is to be found in “oneness”.
b. The Disciples can find oneness with each other.
c. They can sort out their differences and have unity of heart, mind and spirit.
3. “I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one”
a. Perfection has the following nuances:
i. Maturity
ii. Completeness
b. This oneness may be achieved.
i. Jesus in the Disciples.
ii. The Father in Jesus.
iii. The Disciples among themselves.
4. “And that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me”
a. The world would then know the basic fact that God had indeed sent Jesus.
b. And that the Father had loved the Disciples as He had loved Jesus.
c. Oneness may result in tremendous glory that also enhances our witness to the world.
