Authority From God
Text: John 17: 2-3
AUTHORITY FROM GOD
Jesus was very conscious that all He had in His life and ministry came from God the Father.
“As You have given Him authority over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.”
John 17:2-3
1. “As You have given Him authority over all flesh”
a. Ultimately, all authority comes from God.
b. “Authority over all flesh”
i. This was God’s original word given to Man (Genesis 1:28).
ii. But Adam did not know how to appreciate what God had given.
iii. He became disobedient to the Lord and sinned (Genesis 3).
c. Jesus was conscious of what God had given Him.
i. He had authority over sickness.
ii. He had authority to heal and to bless.
2. “That He should give eternal life to as many as You have given Him”
a. One of the greatest gifts given was the right to grant eternal life.
b. He is able to give eternal life to those who turn to Him in faith.
c. Jesus did not determine who would be saved.
i. He trusted in His Father.
ii. As many as the Father brought to Him, they would be given eternal life.
3. “This is eternal life”
a. To know the LORD as the only true God.
i. This comes with knowledge,
ii. And understanding,
iii. And, of course, faith.
b. “And Jesus Christ whom You have sent”
i. Faith in Jesus is of critical importance too.
ii. This comes with knowledge and trust in Jesus as the Messiah (“Christ”) sent by God.
Eternal life is truly the most significant gift that one can have from God!
