The Trials That Would Come
Text: John 16: 2
THE TRIALS THAT WOULD COME
Jesus knew what His enemies would do to Him. He also knew what they would do to the Disciples. They must be prepared for the severe trials they would experience.
“They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service.”
John 16:2
1. “They will put you out of the synagogues”
a. There were two places where Israel would gather together for worship.
i. The synagogue
ii. The Temple in Jerusalem
b. The synagogue
i. Many events took place in the synagogue.
ii. Weekly worship on the Sabbath.
iii. Social events were celebrated at the synagogues (weddings, local festivities).
c. To be put out of the synagogue
i. This would cause the Disciples to be ostracised.
ii. There would be the loss of friends and possibly family.
2. “The time is coming that whoever kills you”
a. Killing of the Disciples may even take place.
b. This is severe and may even be thought of as “extreme”.
c. But this possibility must be raised as a word of forewarning.
3. “Will think that he offers God service”
a. Enemies of the faith will think differently.
b. The mindset of the enemy:
i. He convinces himself that he is serving God.
ii. He believes that by killing believers he is offering service to God.
4. Not easy to suffer for the sake of the Lord
a. Pain is never easy to take.
b. Suffering severely for Christ would require a strong faith.
c. The Disciples must seek to strengthen themselves in any way they can.
