The Teachings of Jesus
Text: John 13: 34-35
THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS
How did the Disciples understand the teachings of Jesus? They were not mere stories. The truths He taught them were to be regarded as “commandments!”
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; As I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
John 13:34-35
1. “A new commandment I give to you”
a. The words of Jesus are to be regarded as “commandments” and not “advice” or “suggestions”
b. This was stated in this specific way for emphasis
2. “That you love one another”
a. This was not evident among the disciples yet
b. They were still vying for positions of greatness
c. The command was specific
i. They are commanded to love one another
ii. This was not an option
3. “As I have loved you, that you also love one another”
a. How had Jesus shown His love to the Disciples?
i. He forgave their sins
ii. He drew them close to Himself
iii. He befriended them
iv. He trusted them
v. He loved them to the very end
b. This must be the way the Disciples love each other
i. Not in mere words
ii. But in deeds
4. “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another”
a. The hallmark of being a true disciple of Jesus was “love”
b. This love would be of the supreme kind
c. It would be of the same quality as the love Jesus had shown His disciples!
