The Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem

Text: John 12: 16

THE TRIUMPHAL ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM

The entry into Jerusalem may indeed be described as “triumphant!” Such triumphal entries were given to victorious kings as they returned from war in the ancient days! The scene described by all the Gospels had features of a national triumphal entry given to mighty kings (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40; John 12:12-15). This was a glorious fulfilment of the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9.

1. The victorious King

a. He had conquered disease.
b. He had conquered sin.
c. He had conquered Satan and his demons.
d. He had conquered death.
e. He deserved the title “King!”

2. The great multitudes

a. The loyal disciples played a leading role.
b. The general multitudes who were subjects of the Kingdom of God.
c. The hailing of Jesus as “Blessed” was correct.
d. He had indeed come in the name of the Lord.

3. The triumphal entrance

a. Jesus rode on a donkey’s colt as King.
b. His humility and gentleness would cause Him to stand out from all other rulers.

NO FULL COMPREHENSION

While the disciples and the multitudes greeted Jesus with great joy, they did not fully comprehend the significance of this event.

“His disciples did not understand these things at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him
and that they had done these things to Him.”

John 12:16

1. “His disciples did not understand these things at first”

a. Prophecy was still fulfilled.
b. What was lacking was full comprehension and appreciation.

2. “But when Jesus was glorified”

a. This is a reference to the resurrection of Jesus.
b. The disciples remembered what had been prophetically written about Jesus
The fulfilment of prophecies does not depend on man’s comprehension or appreciation!

2. 许多人
