An Angry Outburst
Text: John 12: 4-6
AN ANGRY OUTBURST
Judas Iscariot was there at the home of Lazarus when Mary poured out her pound of spikenard oil on the feet of Jesus!
“But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said, ‘Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?’ This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.”
John 12:4-6
1. “But one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son”
a. John carefully identified who Judas was.
b. The name of Judas was a common one.
c. Three things were noted:
i. He was one of the disciples of Jesus.
ii. He was called Judas Iscariot.
iii. He was the son of Simon.
2. “Who would betray Him”
a. At that point of time no one knew who would betray Jesus.
b. The Gospel of John was written many years later.
3. The angry words of Judas Iscariot
a. “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii”
i. Judas was able to figure out the cost of the fragrant oil of spikenard.
ii. Three hundred denarii would be the wages of a labourer who had worked hard for a year.
b. “And given to the poor”
i. It would seem that Judas was concerned for the poor.
ii. Judas’ remark caused some of the other disciples to speak up against Mary too (Matthew 26:8).
4. “He was a thief”
a. John added an important note concerning the remark of Judas.
b. Judas had been in charge of the money the Disciples were sometimes given.
c. Judas had been stealing from their common purse for some time.
