The Conversation with Mary
Text: John 11: 34-36
THE CONVERSATION WITH MARY
Jesus did not speak to Mary as He did with Martha. That would not have yielded any significant result.
“And He said, ‘Where have you laid him?’ They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see.’ Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, ‘See how He loved him!’”
John 11:34-36
1. “And He said, ‘Where have you laid him’”
a. Jesus spoke to more than just Mary.
b. He was addressing all who came with Mary.
c. Where was the tomb of Lazarus?
2. “They said to Him, ‘Lord, come and see’”
a. The reply was swift.
b. They knew where Lazarus was laid.
c. They invited Jesus to see the tomb where Lazarus was laid.
3. “Jesus wept”
a. John noted the tears that came to the eyes of the Lord Jesus.
b. But he did not explain why He had wept.
4. “Then the Jews said, ‘See how He loved him’”
a. This was an assumption of the Jews.
b. They thought that Jesus wept because Lazarus had died.
c. They thought that these were the natural tears of love that are shed when a loved one has departed.
THE DEEPER REASONS FOR THE TEARS OF JESUS
There were deeper reasons that must be understood.
1. What the tears of Jesus did not mean
a. These were not tears of despair for Jesus knew that Lazarus had died.
b. These were not mere tears for the death of a loved one for He had come to raise him up.
2. What the tears of Jesus meant
a. Tears of sorrow that there was such a deep sense of unbelief.
b. Tears of sadness that those who were very close to Him did not fully understand who He was!
