Text: Galatians 5: 13-15
MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ But if you bite and devour one another, beware lest you be consumed by one another!
Galatians 5:13-15
THE LAW OF LOVE
1. The message of the Gospel that Paul preached contained many elements:
a. Grace and mercy
b. Justification and holiness
c. Salvation and eternal life
2.The Gospel message also contained the aspect called “Liberty”.
a. This aspect was not fully comprehended.
b. It suffered from:
i. Misunderstanding
ii. Misapplication
iii. Abuse
3. Once again, Paul sought to explain what this “Liberty” really was.
a. Believers were liberated from:
i. Traditionalism
ii. Legalism
b. But liberty does not mean:
i. Serving the flesh.
ii. Living lawlessly.
b. Liberty includes two elements that was emphasised.
i. There must be a genuine love within the heart.
ii. And this love must compel believers to serve one another genuinely.
4. The Lord Jesus Christ highlighted the great law.
a. To love the Lord with all the heart, all the soul and with all the mind.
b. And to love one’s neighbour as himself (Matthew 22:37-39).
5. Paul highlighted the second part of the Lord’s teaching.
a. Believers must practise loving one another.
b. This is the law of liberty in its finest expression.
6. A solemn word of warning was given.
a. If people “bite and devour” one another.
b. There will come a time when they will destroy one another.
