MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION

“You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have laboured for you in vain.”

Galatians 4:10-11

OBSERVATION OF TRADITIONAL JEWISH FEAST DAYS

1. Ancient Israel were instructed to keep religious traditions.

a. These were recorded in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy.
b. Three religious traditions were especially commanded:
i. The Passover/ Unleavened Bread Deuteronomy 16:1-8
ii. The Feast of Weeks/ Pentecost Deuteronomy 16:9-12
iii. The Feast of Tabernacles Deuteronomy 16:13-17

2. The traditions kept by Israel in the 1st Century.

a. The Lord Jesus warned against the “traditions of the elders” (Matthew 15:2).
b. He cited Isaiah 29:13 to describe the people who taught these things;

“Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honour Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’”

Matthew 15:7-9

i. They were hypocrites.
ii. Outwardly, they appear to draw near to God.
iii. But their heart was far away.
iv. They offered worship in vain.
v. They were teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.
c. This was the problem that Paul observed among the affected Galatians.

3. The Galatian Christians

a. They were observing “days and months and seasons and years”.
b. What was the point of all these observances?

4. With great sadness.

a. Paul had laboured so hard:
i. To preach the Gospel.
ii. To help people come to faith in the Lord Jesus.
iii. To establish a church.
b. Was all the effort in vain?
i. It would be if the people turned their back on the Gospel.
ii. If they were to choose to follow man-made traditions rather than the Lord Jesus and His teachings.
iii. He feared for the Galatian believers.

iii.

iii.

i. 传福音

ii.

iii.

iii.
