MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, ‘Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfil it.’ This salutation by my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains. Grace be with you. Amen.”
Colossians 4:16-18
THE READING OF THE EPISTLES OF PAUL
1. The Epistles of Paul
a. Paul gave clear instructions.
i. His epistle to the Colossians was to be read to the church.
ii. It was also to be sent and read to the church in Laodicea.
b. Paul had also written an epistle to Laodiceans and that letter was meant to be read to the Colossians.
c. The epistles of Paul were commonly copied and sent to other churches.
2. Archippus
a. A word of exhortation was given to him.
b. He was given a ministry by the Lord.
c. He must make every effort to fulfil his ministry.
3. The last few words of Paul to the Colossians.
a. He assures them that this epistle was genuine.
i. He writes that this came from “(his) own hand”.
ii. He signed off simply and personally as “Paul”.
iii. There were forgeries of Paul’s letters.
iv. There were some who used the names of the Apostles for their own selfish or evil reasons.
b. Prayer request:
i. That Paul was still in chains.
ii. This knowledge must move the heart to pray.
c. Benediction
i. The focus was simply the “grace” of God to be given.
ii. The conclusion of this Benediction was a firm “Amen”.
