MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.”
Colossians 4:1
ADMONITION TO CHRISTIAN MASTERS
1. Paul gave good words of admonition to Christian slaves.
2. It was only right that he should also admonish Christian masters.
SLAVES WERE OFTEN TREATED BADLY
1. Slaves had no civil rights at all.
2. They were considered the property of their masters.
3. Masters would be supported by the law courts if any charges were to be made against them.
4. What were commonly experienced by slaves:
a. They were punished frequently.
b. They could be physically beaten severely.
c. They were not paid for their work.
d. If slaves ran away and were caught, they could be:
i. Imprisoned
ii. Sold away
iii. Or be punished in any way the master sees fit.
CHRISTIAN MASTERS
1. To give to slaves what is just and fair.
a. Paul was suggesting that slaves may be remunerated for their work.
i. They were to be given wages.
ii. They could be given the equivalence of wages.
b. Just and fair:
i. Daily rated workers were paid a denarius a day (Matthew 20:1-16).
ii. The landowner can also give what he deems right to give.
c. Paul suggested that slaves should not be taken advantaged of at any time.
2. A Master in heaven.
a. Christian slave owners are to remember that they have a Master in heaven.
b. The Lord Jesus is that Master and Lord in heaven.
c. We are slaves of the Lord Jesus and yet He has always taken great care of us.
d. Christian masters would do well to heed this word of admonition.
