MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – SALVATION
“Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as of many, but as of one, ‘And to your Seed,’ who is Christ.”
Galatians 3:16
THE SEED OF ABRAHAM
1. What was actually promised by God to Abraham?
2. We need to look at the original word of blessing promised.
“Blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your descendants as the stars of the heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your descendants shall possess the gate of their enemies. In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Genesis 22:17-18
a. The Context
i. Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac if God so desired.
ii. His faith in God was proven.
b. God then promised to bless Abraham.
i. His descendants.
ii. All nations.
c. How would this come about?
i. The text says, “In your seed”.
ii. But what is this “seed?”
3. Paul presents a very sharp understanding of this text.
a. The promise was made to Abraham and his seed.
b. Paul pointed out the fact that God mentioned “seed” (singular).
c. God did not say “seeds” (plural).
4. The truth explained.
a. God meant “The Seed”.
b. This Seed was none other than the Christ.
i. The Messiah
ii. The Anointed One
c. Through the Lord Jesus who is The Christ.
i. The blessings of God would be given.
ii. These blessings apply to all who believe in the Lord Jesus.
iii. The blessings are not limited to the ethnic descendants of Abraham.
iv. They are extended to all nations.
v. The word “nations” is a reference to Gentiles.
