MSITN VITAL DOCTRINES – CHRISTOLOGY
“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses”
Colossians 2:13
BEFORE FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
1. Paul was very candid in his statement about the spiritual state of man.
a. We are “dead in trespasses”.
b. The meaning of the word “trespass”.
i. The word “trespass” means “transgressions against God’s laws”.
ii. In other words, we have all sinned against God.
c. What are the consequences of sin?
i. We are guilty as trespassers.
ii. We are liable to be judged by God.
iii. Sin causes us to be spiritually dead.
d. The uncircumcision of the flesh.
i. This is a reference to Gentiles in the church in Colosse.
ii. But it is more than just an ethnic reference.
iii. It is a reference to the state of uncleanness because sin has not even been cut off from their life.
2. God has made us alive in the Lord Jesus Christ.
a. The first thing God does is to deal with our sins.
b. Our sins have grave consequences:
i. We stand guilty before God.
ii. We will suffer whatever penalty God may mete out.
c. God shows grace and mercy when we believe in the Lord Jesus.
i. He forgives us of all our sins and trespasses.
ii. We need not fear being judged and condemned by God.
iii. We stand before God freely forgiven!
iv. This is a great and wonderful truth to rejoice in!
d. We are made alive in the Lord Jesus Christ.
e. We are no longer dead to the Lord.
f. We can respond to God:
i. In faith.
ii. In love.
iii. In life.
iv. In service.
