Text: Luke 8: 37-39
THE REQUEST OF THE GADARENES
1. The whole multitude (Luke 8:37a)
a. The surrounding regions
b. Gergesa
c. Gadara
2. Their request to the Lord Jesus
a. They asked Him to depart (Luke 8:37b).
b. They were seized by fear (Luke 8:37c).
THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS
1. He showed great understanding
2. These were Gentiles
a. They were controlled by their fear.
b. They did not know much about God.
3. He acceded to their request
He would depart from Gadara (Luke 8:37d).
THE REQUEST OF LEGION
1. He made a request too.
2. He asked if he could follow the Lord Jesus.
3. He wanted to be with the Lord who healed and saved him (Luke 8:38).
THE CHALLENGE OF THE LORD JESUS
1. He understood the desire of Legion
a. To be with the Lord.
b. To learn.
c. To be a disciple and follow Him.
2. The greater need
a. Gadara had rejected the Lord Jesus.
b. Legion can fulfil a special role.
3. The Lord’s word to Legion
a. “Return to your own house” (Luke 8:39a).
i. He will not follow the Lord at this point.
ii. He is to return to his family.
b. “And tell what great things God has done for you” (Luke 8:39b).
i. Legion had experienced the mercy of God.
ii. He had also experienced the power of the Lord Jesus.
iii. He had been healed.
iv. He had been given salvation.
These were indeed “great things” that God had done in his life! Legion must share what he has experienced from God!
