THE NEGATIVE REACTION OF SIMON THE PHARISEE

1. He spoke to himself (Luke 7:39a)

a. He did not voice out his opinion.
b. He was muttering to himself.
c. He may have thought that no one would have heard what he had said so quietly.

2. He spoke about the Lord Jesus

a. He had doubts that He was at all a prophet.
“This man, if He were a prophet”
Luke 7:39b
i. He may have invited the Lord Jesus into his house thinking He was a prophet.
ii. In those days, some believed that Elijah may come to a worthy house and honour that household with his presence.
iii. Simon had second thoughts about the Lord Jesus now.
b. He questioned the Lord’s discernment.
“Would know who and what manner of woman this is
who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”
Luke 7:39c
i. The Pharisees would never literally touch a person who is sinful!
ii. He reasoned that if the Lord Jesus was at all a discerning Person, then He would have known that the woman was sinful, and He would not allow her to come to Him at all.

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD JESUS TO SIMON THE PHARISEE

1. The Lord Jesus answered Simon

a. He knew what Simon had said under his breath.
b. He asked if He could speak to him openly.

d. He felt he was ready to take whatever the Lord Jesus would say to him.

2. A Parable about Two debtors

i. One debtor owed him 500 denarii.
ii. The other debtor owed him 50 denarii.
iii. Both were unable to pay their debts.
b. The creditor freely forgave their debts (Luke 7:42).
i. There was a vast difference between the size of debt owed.
ii. This Parable was told with a definite lesson in mind.

3. A question was raised by the Lord Jesus

a. “Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love more?” (Luke 7:42b0
i. The answer would be obvious.
ii. This was not a trick question.
b. Simon’s answer
“I suppose the one whom he forgave more.”
Luke 7:43a
i. This was the logical answer.
ii. It was the correct answer.
c. The Lord Jesus concurred.
“You have rightly judged.”
Luke 7:43b
i. Simon was commended for answering correctly.
ii. But what was the point of this Parable?

Did Simon understand what the Lord Jesus was saying to him?
